Winter Home Security Tips from our Emergency Locksmiths

As a locksmith you are in the advantageous position of understanding home security and knowing how best to keep premises secure.  This is because it is your job to attend situations where homes have been broken into or locks damaged due to poor security measures.  As the average homeowner however, you may not be privy to this knowledge or might have more important things on your mind.

To help you protect your home this winter we are sharing our experience with you, so here’s some top home security tips from our emergency locksmiths:

1)    Light it up - During the winter months the days are short and the nights long and dark.  Not only does this mean we spend less time outside ensuring our premises are secure but it also means we often can’t see where there might be a problem.  It is advisable to install good security lighting that will illuminate gardens and other outdoor areas as and when anyone approaches the building.  This will enable you to clearly see who is there and also act as a deterrent to would-be-thieves.

2)    Lock it up – It goes without saying that during the winter, and indeed all year around, it is important to lock your windows and doors when you are not at home or when you retire for the evening.  Those dark nights however might be hiding problems with your uPVC doors and windows that you are hoping to overlook until the better weather.  Don’t!  Please make sure you check your windows, doors and locking mechanisms regularly and if you notice any problems such as jammed mechanisms or window hinges that stick please contact your local locksmith as soon as you can to replace or repair the faulty items.  Leaving these problems unattended could be increasing the risk of your home being broken into.

3)    Stay keyed up – when the evenings are dark and you or your family members are returning home, there is nothing worse than forgetting your house key and having to wait outside for someone else to get home.  Where possible, arrange to leave a spare key with a trustworthy neighbour or local relative, just in case you forget your key.  If you suspect that you have lost your key, it is advisable to contact your local locksmith as soon as possible to arrange for the locks to be replaced, to prevent any lost keys falling into the wrong hands.

These home security tips can be applied throughout the year, not just in the winter, so you can stay safe and secure in your home.
