What Should You Do If Your UPVC Door Or Window Locks Break?

We've all been there – you’re in a rush to go out, and in a bid to quickly lock the house up, the key snaps in the lock, or it simply won’t turn fully to engage the locking mechanism.  Whilst it’s tempting to just go out anyway so that you’re not late for your appointment, you are putting your home at risk by leaving your home unsecured.

24 hour emergency lock repair

So, what’s the best course of action?  If the broken lock means that your house is not fully secure, then you are best advised to stay put, or at least ask a friend or family member to wait in the house for you until the lock is fixed.  Most reputable locksmiths will offer a 24 hour emergency lock repair service, so it’s best to find a local locksmith who will be able to visit your home as soon as they can.  Check to see if the locksmith is a member of the Master Locksmiths Association, as this will ensure that only a fully qualified, and trusted locksmith will be fixing your door lock.

UPVC lock repairs
In the past, most domestic door locking systems consisted of either a mortice lock or a Yale lock.  However, as the vast majority of homes are now fitted with UPVC doors and windows, you will need to ensure that your chosen locksmith is equipped to deal with UPVC lock repairs.  UPVC doors can provide greater security for a home than a traditional wooden door, due to its advanced locking systems.  Of course, this can mean that it is a little trickier to fix any problems, which is why it’s best to leave any repairs to the professionals.

Jammed door locks
Some door locks become jammed but can be released using specialist equipment, meaning that the lock may not need to be replaced to rectify the problem.  However in more serious cases where the lock has become jammed as a result of the door being severely damaged, then it may be that the whole door will need to be replaced.

Broken keys
If a key becomes broken in the lock, very often the locksmith will be able to carefully remove the key, freeing the lock so that it is ready for normal use.  They can then cut a new key at your home - meaning that you do not need to visit a locksmith store, to have a replacement key cut.
